ELNU Abenaki
Vermont Indigenous Celebration
July 9-12, 2009







You are invited to a  four day celebration of our the
Abenaki People's deep rooted history, culture and
tradition  Learn about our past and present through a
series of demonstrations, discussions and films.  
Stimulate all of your senses as
you walk through a seventeenth century Abenaki
encampment, taste our food,  see crafts
demonstrations and talk to our artists, listen to our
Traditions music, songs, stories and watch our
dancers.  There will also be guest appearance from
our Mohawk cousins from the other side of Bitabagw,
Abenaki for The Lake in
Between (known today as Lake Champlain).  ECHO
Lake Aquarium and Science Center & Leahy Campus
make the perfect backdrop for this celebration of our
culturally rich heritage.  There will be ongoing indoor
and outdoor activities for the whole family.

Storytelling Mural Project with

Laughing Couple Duo

Come and enjoy this demonstration of Native American stories by Abenaki story teller Carolyn Black while Abenaki
pen and ink artist Rick Hunt illustrates the story right before your eyes! This interactive performance piece will be
a permanent addition to the Abbe museum exhibits. The stories will focus on family life, past and present, as well
as the seasons. Rick will be putting the finishing touches on the murals throughout the day on Saturday and
Sunday.

In conjunction with our current exhibition Twisted Path, workshops and programs are supported in part by a grant
from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Heritage Day celebrations that are open to the public have
been held in Highgate (at the airport) from 1993 until the
lasttwo years (the 1993 event was attended by over 2,000
people,including Governor Howard Dean) and typically
occur onMemorial Day weekend of each year. For the past
severalyears, the location has been the village green in
downtown Swanton.
